Five Grey Cups from 1961–1978 stand out as particularly memorable chapters in Canadian football history. The 1961 Grey Cup was the first championship game decided in overtime, with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 21–14 after Ken Ploen scored the winning touchdown. The following year produced the legendary 1962 Fog Bowl, when thick fog forced the Winnipeg–Hamilton game to be suspended with just over nine minutes remaining and completed the next day, with Winnipeg holding on for a 28–27 victory. The 1972 Grey Cup provided a dramatic Hamilton triumph, as 19-year-old Ian Sunter kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired to give the Tiger-Cats a 13–10 victory over Saskatchewan. In 1976, Ottawa defeated Saskatchewan 23–20 on Tony Gabriel’s iconic 24-yard touchdown catch from Tom Clements with only seconds remaining, a play forever remembered as “The Catch.” Finally, the 1977 Grey Cup, known as the “Ice Bowl,” saw Montreal defeat Edmonton 41–6 in brutal, icy conditions at Olympic Stadium, creating one of the most memorable and visually striking championship games in CFL history.
