The Vinaigrette is modelled in a deep broad rectangular form and is engraved all over with plain diamond frames which contain detailed floral sprays on a scratch engraved ground. The decoration has been executed to an outstanding standard and is very crisp. The cover opens up to reveal very fine gilding and a grille beautifully pierced with foliate scrolls and a central raying flower head. The box is fully marked in the base and with the maker's mark and sterling mark in the cover. The underside of the grille is finely finished. Joseph Ash was a very fine box maker and this is shown with this box. His first mark was entered on 14th September, 1801, so this represents an early example of his work. He had workshops at 3, Angel Street, Butcher Hall Lane, when this piece was made. Length: 1.4 inches, 3.5 cm. Width: 1 inch, 2.5 cm.
