After Johann Carl Loth (XIX-XX) - Mercurio che suona il flauto per Argo

Mercury playing the flute for Argus Oil on copper plate 19th-20th century Homage to Johann Carl Loth (1632–1698) An interesting painting executed in oil on a copper plate, depicting an episode from classical mythology: Mercury intent on playing the flute before Argus, the many-eyed giant commissioned by Juno to watch over Io. The composition revisits the famous subject treated by the German painter trained in Venice, Johann Carl Loth, a prolific artist in the seventeenth century, particularly known for his mythological and biblical scenes, characterized by a strong theatrical approach, monumental figures, and intense chiaroscuro. In this nineteenth-century version the artist reprises the narrative moment in which Mercury, depicted with his distinctive headdress and the flute in hand, tries to enchant Argus through music. The scene is built around the close dialogue between the two protagonists: Mercury appears focused on the musical performance, while Argus, with an elderly physiognomy and a long beard, listens attentively. The contrast between the young, vigorous Mercury and the older Argus lends the composition a particular narrative intensity. Particularly interesting is the rendering of Mercury’s figure, marked by notable attention to anatomy, with the torso bare, arms vigorously modeled, and the red drapery wrapping the lower body. The palette, played on reds, browns, greens, and deep blues, helps create a gathered, theatrical atmosphere, while the light concentrates attention on the faces and hands of the protagonists. The choice of copper plate constitutes a feature of particular antiquarian interest. The metal support, widely used in European painting especially for small to medium-sized works, allowed an extremely smooth and compact surface, suitable for meticulous painting and detailed definition. The painting also exhibits the characteristic chromatic brilliance of copper painting. The work should be considered a free nineteenth-century interpretation of Johann Carl Loth’s famous model, not an autograph work by the seventeenth-century artist. Nevertheless, the painting testifies to the fortune and persistence of the great Baroque painting models even in the nineteenth century, when mythological subjects and compositions by ancient masters continued to be reproduced and reinterpreted.
