Lisa Monna - 03 (n.759) - Dolls series The measurements are: - collage: 50.00 cm x 40.00 cm Acrylic painting on shredded paper on canvas I create paintings using acrylic paints and thousands of small pieces of recycled paper: everyday paper is transformed into art instead of ending up in the trash. It is not the Mona Lisa... it is Lisa Monna inasmuch as the figure is inverted with respect to the original. This work represents a conceptual evolution of the artistic project "Not your doll", a series born to explore and denounce the objectification of women and gender-based violence. Through a meticulous mosaic made entirely with fragments of everyday paper recovered and reused to create art, the icons of art history are deconstructed and reassembled. The iconic figures, images of women observed and idealized, are here stripped of their aura of passive perfection. Historically, the figure of the woman in art has often been reduced to a silent muse, a "doll" of aesthetic perfection molded to please the gaze of others. With these works they stop being the Renaissance "dolls" to be admired and become living figures literally rebuilt from fragments of daily reality, from news and everyday words. No longer objects of others’ gaze, but fragmented and powerful presences that invite the viewer to look beyond the surface of beauty. A piece with very strong visual and social impact, ideal for a contemporary collection attentive to themes related to the role and image of women in society. Each piece is securely packaged, wrapped and protected for shipping and will arrive in a completely safe box, including the Certificate of Authenticity. After an initial period devoted to sculpture there was a long halt lasting almost twenty years. Since December 2014 I resumed with the “two dimensions” for reasons of time and space, leaving sculpture aside and dedicating myself to acrylic paintings. I love painting abstract landscapes but recently I have been pushing myself to paint faces of people, both imagined and real. For me painting is “freezing time” in that exact moment; my painting is often a faded memory and thus my works are “worn, eroded by time.” Sometimes the subjects of my paintings are stretches of walls also eroded by time, with mosses and mushrooms that — over time — grow on the surface. Time passing inexorably is the main theme of my works. Coming from a wonderful experience with clay manipulation, I love sculpture, the third dimension, the sense of touch and my paintings are often characterized by reliefs clearly perceivable by touch and to the naked eye. Recently, after several years in which my works were made from bits of recycled paper forming figures, I am pushing myself to explore Optical Art where I use painted wooden discs arranged in lines and grids with mathematical precision that, when viewed up close, seem to form an abstract colorful painting but as you move away a portrait emerges from the many painted wooden discs. Violence against women is a theme that characterizes almost all my works when I reproduce women’s faces, precisely to give them a voice when they do not have the strength or courage to denounce the fact that they are not their partner’s dolls and cannot be mistreated or, worse, become victims of violence.
