Brooches in the shape of a crescent moon first came into fashion at the end of the 19th century. Ladies of the time often wore them in conjunction with various other brooches at the neckline of their sumptuous dresses or on the collar of their high-necked blouses. Many moons were decorated exclusively with diamonds, but more colourful designs were also implemented, sometimes with several rows of precious coloured stones, diamonds or pearls. The brooch presented here is also a beautiful example from the family of so-called "crescent brooches", as the brooches popular in the English-speaking world were called. Set in beautiful rose gold, fifteen old European cut diamonds are set in a running row, giving the piece a gorgeous appearance. As was sometimes the case in those days, the brooch can be unscrewed - there are further original screw threads on the back of the brooch for attaching other mounts - so the moon could also serve as a hairpin, for example. The brooch was made in the years before the last turn of the century and found its way to us here in Berlin. It refers to the oriental fashion of that time, carries off, so to speak, into stories from the Arabian Nights, gives its wearer a touch of exoticism and marks her out as being as educated as she is sensual. A wonderful piece with about 1.35 carats of diamonds in the historic old European cut.
