"The crescent, the crown and the moon are always popular forms of jewelry. The fancy for them does not vary as it does for other pieces of jewelry", reported a major jewelry magazine in 1891. We do indeed find crescent moons in all kinds of variations: With pearls, set with colored gemstones, or with diamonds in silver or gold. This moon belongs to the latter type. White, glittering old-cut diamonds are set in a row and densely cover the surface of the crescent moon. They are held in place by only the smallest of grained settings, which are visually restrained and yet hold the diamonds securely in place. The side of the brooch features a finely openwork gallery. It was probably once part of another piece of jewellery, a comb or a larger ensemble. In later times, it was pinned and made wearable as a brooch. We were able to discover this beautiful brooch in Stuttgart. It is of a high, heavy quality. The quotation from [Anon:] 'Novelties in Jewelry', The Manufacturing Jeweler, Vol. 9 (1891), 1580-1582, p. 1582.
