Ring Australian Opal / new In 925 sterling silver set Weight: 1.62 g 7.2 mm x 5.0 mm New and unworn Ring size: U 54 - 55 (sits right between) UK N - O US 7.0 FR 14 - 15 Inner diameter: 17.35 mm The opal is a mineral from the mineral class of "oxides and hydroxides." As an amorphous solid, opal (similar to glass) has no crystal structure and usually appears as a massive vein filling or nodular form. Opals are processed exclusively into gemstones. The word Opal was borrowed from the Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and presumably goes back to upala from Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, it was used to refer to various rocks, while early Magyars called opal mines opálbánya. Opals were already considered in antiquity to be particularly valuable gems, sometimes even higher valued than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote about it: “[…] it has its own fire, finer than that in the carbunculus, it possesses the purplish spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald and an altogether incredible play of light.” Shipping as insured registered mail
