Bass Otis (American, 1784-1861), Portrait of a Young Man, 1813 Depicted seated half-length and wearing a formal necktie. Oil on panel, signed and dated, "B. Otis Pinxt/ March 1st, 1813". Dimensions: 28 in. x 23 in.; 36 1/2 in. x 31 1/2 in. (framed) Provenance: from descendants of Elizabeth Morris Wistar. Condition Small spot of paint loss to red curtain at bottom right. Scratch to right of sitter's chin. Under UV light, inpainting apparent around the sitter's eyes, on his left cheek, and on his necktie. Other spots of inpainting along edges by frame, at top right quadrant, and left side. The giltwood frame possibly original, with minor expected chips and losses to gesso and gilding, with areas of gilding refreshed.
