A Unique Model of the 1931 Bank of China 10 Yuan. CHINA--REPUBLIC. Bank of China. 10 Yuan, 1931. P-Unlisted. S/M#C294. Front Printer's Model. PMG Encapsulated. Tientsin. An exquisitely unadopted hand painted design for a proposed 1931 Bank of China 10 Yuan. Uniface obverse, believed to be unique. Green and black, Chinese temple upon a rocky hillside. Prior to 1931, ABNC was the only non Chinese printer contracted to produce notes for the Bank of China. Thomas De La Ruse (TDLR) produced the first issued note, the 5 Yuan, in 1931, followed quickly by notes in 1934, 1935, 1936, and 1937. The 'Temple of Heaven' 5 Yuan was the only denomination issued in 1931; the usual 1 and 10 Yuan notes were not issued. The true reason why this was the case may never be known, but at least we can see that the intention was there, and, judging from the similar style of this 10 Yuan printer's model to the 5 Yuan note, the design process was near the final stage. An intriguing historical piece.
