The years between 1890 and 1914 are known as the "Fin de Siècle" (French for "end of the century"). The jewellery of this period shows a wide range of styles. In addition to Art Nouveau, the so-called garland style, which revived 18th century forms, was particularly popular. Its preferred motifs included elegant bow shapes, which were designed in a wide variety of luxurious materials. This pair of earrings beautifully illustrates this fine aesthetic. The open-worked gold pendants with silver fronts take the form of elegant bows, each with a large gray pearl swinging at the end. Their soft, cool surface contrasts with the sparkle of the old-cut diamonds that cover all surfaces and bathe the earrings in a warm light. The earrings were created from antique elements dating from c. 1910: The diamonds with their settings of silver on gold were once probably part of another, larger piece of jewellery. The earwires and pearls were added more recently. We discovered the pair in London.
