Spanish Expressionist School – 20th Century The Crowd Oil. Signed, signature illegible. Interesting figurative composition belonging to the Spanish expressionist school of the 20th century, focused on the depiction of a large group of characters gathered in an indeterminate space. The scene is built through a deliberate simplification of human figures. The characters lack almost all individualized facial features and are defined through broad color surfaces, synthetic contours, and minimal gestures. This absence of identity transforms the individual into part of an anonymous crowd, granting the composition a more universal reading. The use of color as the main expressive element stands out. Intense reds, pinks, blues, yellows, greens, and blacks are distributed in wide masses that structure the different figures. The woman on the left, dressed in dark clothing and with a yellow purse, and the large blue-clad male figure constitute two of the main balance points of the composition. In the center appears a small child figure, whose reduced scale contrasts with the surrounding adults and reinforces the sense of concentration and human density. Traditional perspective is practically eliminated. The characters overlap and compress within a deliberately flat space, while the background is reduced to a large light surface delimited by an intense red line and, externally, by a dark blue band. This device produces an image of strong graphic force and concentrates attention entirely on the figures. The brushwork is direct and visible, with areas of pictorial matter applied spontaneously. The artist deliberately eschews anatomical detail and academic shading in order to privilege form, rhythm, and chromatic intensity. From a stylistic point of view, the work sits within the broad renewal of Spanish expressionist figuration in the 20th century, especially that which used the human figure in a synthetic and anti-naturalistic way. In Spain, different figurative currents of the second half of the 20th century explored precisely the simplification, deformation, and anonymity of the figure as expressive resources, coexisting with abstraction and informalism. The result is a painting with a markedly modern character in which the representation of the crowd becomes fundamentally an exercise in color, rhythm, and formal synthesis. The work is signed, though the signature is illegible, so no concrete attribution is proposed. The state of conservation should be carefully assessed using the photographs provided, which are an integral part of the description and allow for an appraisal of the piece’s current condition.
