Edgar Vinters (Latvian, 1919-2014), Still Life with Red Poppies

Oil on panel, 1989, signed and dated at the lower right, presented in a gilt frame. Panel 26 x 36 in.; Frame dimensions 37 1/2 x 47 1/2 in. Edgars Vinters was born in Riga and began studying art at an early age under the pastelist Voldemārs Irbe and later painter Hugo Kārlis Grotuss. In 1940, he entered the Art Academy of Latvia, where his teachers included prominent Latvian artists Leo Svemps, Jānis Cielavs, Augusts Annuss, Kārlis Miesnieks, and Jānis Kuga. His studies were interrupted by World War II in 1944, when he was drafted into military service; following the war, he spent time as a Soviet prisoner of war before returning to Riga in 1947. Vinters subsequently completed his pedagogical training at the Jānis Rozentāls Art High School in 1949 and pursued a long career teaching art and drafting while continuing to paint. After Latvia regained independence, Vinters's work received increasing international recognition, with exhibitions in England, Germany, and the United States. He remained an active painter into his nineties and was honored with the Order of the Three Stars, one of Latvia's highest state decorations, in 2009. Vinters died in Riga in 2014 at the age of 94. Good estate condition.
