Elegant Bar Brooch with Natural Pearls & Diamonds in Gold & Platinum, c. 1910

"Fichus and berths [= collars to fold over] made of lace, chiffon, tulle or a similar airy fabric are essential for a cut-out formal dress. Pleats and gathers are fastened with decorative pins made of precious metal, which are now produced in a wide range and variety." This was the recommendation of the editors of the German magazine Schmuck und Mode to a reader in August 1901. The brooch shown here could have served that reader well to securely and decoratively fasten delicate lace or fine chiffon. Jewelry made of diamonds, pearls and light-colored precious metals belonged to formal dress, which was mainly worn in the evening, for example to receptions or concerts. In this piece too, natural pearls and sparkling old-cut diamonds alternate in a delicate rhythm. The setting is arranged in a straight row, carefully graduated so that the line tapers off elegantly at the ends. Even the undersides of the pearl settings are delicately engraved and shaped like flowers - a detail that demonstrates the sophistication of the craftsmanship. The diamond settings are made of platinum, while the base and pin are made of gold. In its choice of materials and execution, the brooch embodies the refined taste and high level of craftsmanship of the years c. 1910.
