Elegant Déco Pendant with Diamonds in Platinum, c. 1930 & later

The years of the Weimar Republic, between the great wars, are still regarded today as a time of longing. Politically turbulent, characterized by crises and major upheavals, but also progressive, in love with luxury and fun-loving. We think of the early heyday of black-and-white films, nightclubs and cabarets, modern paintings by artists such as Otto Dix. The jewellery created during this period was intended to reflect this attitude to life: It was modern and luxurious, relying on cool monochrome and straightforward, crystalline designs. With its monochrome, high-quality materials and fine, detailed workmanship, which forms a charming contrast to the simple outline, this piece of jewellery is also typical of this era. Seven large old-cut diamonds form a vertical row in the center. They are probably older than the brooch and were used here for a second purpose. Starting from them, radii and rays have been cut into the precious metal. The resulting tracks are set close together with clear rose diamonds in pavé. The impression is of a rushing, explosive firework display of light reflections - just barely contained by the cool, clear framing, whose shiny polish contrasts with the complex surface structure of the middle section. Typical of the time, the piece of jewellery is made with a platinum front, which is set on a white gold base. The piece of jewellery was probably made in Germany and began its life as a brooch. It was recently reworked into a pendant - as many brooches of this type were convertible and had an additional pendant loop, the piece is also historically convincing in this new form. An elegant, timeless jewel that still radiates a little of the electric glow of the cabarets.
