Elongated Antique Brooch Made of Bohemian Garnets, c. 1880

Elongated Antique Brooch Made of Bohemian Garnets, c. 1880

This beautiful brooch is shaped like an elongated star. Its surface is densely set with cut pyrope garnets of exceptional quality, whose dark red still glows with incomparable depth. The stones are arranged in several layers, with large and small ones alternating and capturing the light in their own unique ways. The delicate setting work highlights the characteristic cuts—the rose cut and the table cut—which intensify the stones’ brilliance. Garnets from Bohemia are among the most beautiful and time-honored gemstones in Europe. As early as the Middle Ages, they were believed to possess mysterious powers and were revered as “carfunkels,” whose brilliance was said to illuminate the darkness. In ancient legends and chronicles, they appear as “Bohemian fire dragons,” symbols of strength, passion, and the mysterious inner glow. This antique brooch is a testament to that era when the Bohemian fire captivated Europe. Even today, it still carries within it the radiance of bygone celebrations.
