Florence Naranjo (Native American, 1921-2018) San Ildefonso Pueblo

The vessel features a hand-coiled construction transitioning from a rounded body to a square, slightly flared rim. The exterior is finished with a highly polished black slip, decorated with a wide horizontal band of matte black geometric motifs including stylized avian or water serpent elements and stepped cloud designs. The base is hand-incised with script reading Florence Naranjo, San Ildefonso, Oreja, 1991. The interior retains a matte, unpolished gray-black finish characteristic of traditional reduction firing.
