Fort Leavenworth, Territory of Kansas. Merchants Bank. 1854 $2. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63. No. 2233. Plate A. Described as "true wildcat notes" in Kansas Obsolete Notes and Scrip by Steven Whitfield, the Merchants Bank of Ft. Leavenworth never opened for business. From its inception, the Merchants Bank was little more than a facade designed to bilk the public as a large quantity of notes were printed and circulated as obligations of the bank back East. Many were altered as needed through the application of spurious signatures. This particular piece carries the penned signature of Lucien Ayer who traveled to Fort Leavenworth and announced his intentions of opening a bank per Whitfield. Despite the dubious status of this specimen, it remains highly attractive and reflective of the very day it was produced during the 1850s in technical terms. Estimate: $200 - $300. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.
