François Liberti (attivo Anversa 1688 ca e 1719)

Attributed to FRANÇOIS LIBERTI (active in Antwerp around 1688 to 1719) Allegory of Spring Oil on canvas, 99.5 x 148 cm Frame dimensions, about 124 x 173 x 7 cm NOTE: Publication catalog of the Intermidiart collection. Certificate of Guarantee and Legitimate Provenance. The work with a carved and gilded wooden frame bears slight and physiological (defects) imperfections: This refined canvas constitutes an important addition to our sale catalog, where the wall measurements of the work exalt its valuable decorative impact, qualifying it as a monumental parade canvas, born to embellish the salons of the aristocratic seventeenth-century clientele. The painting bears a market attribution to François Liberti, a tentative attribution widely supported by the formal and stylistic features of the composition. The depicted theme describes the allegory of Spring conceived on the examples of late Baroque Flemish painting, a genre capable of blending the superb northern naturalism with the grace of international taste. The scene centers on the female figure who offers to the putti flower garlands, captured from behind in a pose of elegant classicism, moved only by the rich midnight blue drapery that girds her hips. Identifiable with Venus or Flora, the deity crowns a partially draped winged cupidon, the focal point of a festive infant procession that continues with a second cherub caught in the effort to support an overflowing basket of buds, and a third lifting a floral garland in the background of a river landscape. The core of the work lies in the harmonious contrast between the warm tones of the infant flesh and the lavish polychromy of the floral garland, where roses and other botanical varieties are described with minute calligraphic precision. The entire composition is conceived as a true visual celebration of spring rebirth and nature’s fertility. The quality of the brushwork and the composition highlight the stylistic proximity to François Liberti’s production, an artist registered with the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke and celebrated for his Arcadian and mythological compositions. The sparse yet meaningful documentary notes qualify Liberti as a refined interpreter of the late Flemish School at the turn of the XVII and XVIII centuries. Active within the prestigious Antwerp guild, the master was distinguished by the ability to render the robust and vigorous Baroque heritage of Rubens and Jordaens into a more graceful, idyllic, and decorative Rococo texture, particularly appreciated by contemporary collectors. This canvas fully reflects his characteristic manner: the softness of the flesh tones, the vibrant and satiny rendering of fabrics, and most of all, excellence in floral painting — a genre in which the Antwerp school historically held absolute primacy — all contributing to making the painting a work of great charm and solid scenic impact. FACILY REPORT The work presents in good overall conservation condition, compatible with its age and the conservation history of the artifact. The pictorial surface shows the typical and fascinating network of craquelure (natural time cracking), evenly distributed, attesting to the originality and historicity of the chromatic layer. The brushwork remains generally legible in its shading and chiaroscuro transitions, although the natural oxidation of the superficial protective varnishes gives the canvas a warm overall patina of the period, an element that softens contrasts but preserves the antique charm. The canvas shows proper tension, a sign of a probable and careful relining intervention performed in the past to consolidate the structure. On the front there are small and circumscribed previous restorations and aesthetic retouches, mainly along the margins corresponding to the frame’s rabbet and in the background areas, routine interventions that do not alter the quality or enjoyability of the main composition. The canvas is presented within a splendid carved and gilded wooden frame bearing slight and physiological signs of time and small losses of gilding, which enhance its collecting appeal (frame size 124 x 173 x 7 cm, presence of defects). "The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided at no additional cost so that it is ready to display as soon as it arrives. The frame is included as a courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request order cancellation." Publication: - The Myths and the Territory in Sicily by the Thousand Cultures. UNPUBLISHED QUADRERIA general catalog of the paintings of the cycle “The Myths and the Territory,” 2026 (Pdf). The work will be shipped — being of medium size — with a wooden crate and polystyrene. In the case of sale outside Italian territory, the buyer must wait for the export paperwork processing times.
