HADOL — “THE PRISONER OF WILHELMSHOE” HADOL (Paul). The Prisoner of Wilhelmshöhe. [Paris], Lith. Lemercier & Fils, [1870]. A colored satirical lithograph depicting Napoleon III chained to a post bearing the inscription: “Bonaparte condemned to perpetual disgrace.” A long caption at the bottom of the sheet in which the former emperor ironically addresses the French people and announces his return to Paris. The composition refers to his captivity at Wilhelmshöhe Castle following the surrender of Sedan. Signed “Hadol” on the plate. Paper has browned; there are foxing spots, creases, and small marginal tears; an old pencil annotation is present.
