Henry de MONTHERLANT (Paris 1895–1972) Novelist, essayist, a - Lot 651

Henry de MONTHERLANT (Paris 1895–1972) Novelist, essayist, and playwright. Autograph letter signed at the Château de CHANTILLY (Oise) on September 1, 1962, 2 pages, in-4 format, [to Marcel MITHOIS, literary director of *Réalités* and successful playwright]. He thanks him for having spoken “with such kindness and generosity about my time at the Comédie Française” and congratulates him on his play, which he read with great pleasure and enthusiasm. “I am certain that a bright future lies ahead for it, but I do not believe that this future should be entrusted to Marie Bell, who, despite the variety and richness of her talents, is too much of a tragedienne to properly portray a role that is all lightheartedness and whimsy! ” (Mithois was wise to follow Montherlant’s advice, as he went on to achieve phenomenal success with his play *Croque-Monsieur*)
