Henry Schouten (also listed as Henri Schouten) (Paris, 1860 - Brussels, 1927) was a Belgian painter best known as an animal and landscape painter. He trained at the Academy of Brussels (1876-1881). He underwent a strong influence from the animal painter Alfred Verwee. Schouten was primarily a realist animal painter: cattle, sheep, horses, chicken runs. He placed the animals in their natural environment, with attention to their character traits. The rendering of the two horses in this painting is a wonderful example of this. Henry Schouten began exhibiting in Brussels from 1882 with the Union des Arts. Schouten's paintings were in the second half of the 19th century very popular with the wealthy Belgian bourgeoisie. This painting (oil on canvas) belongs to one of his finest works. A cleaning would make this work even lovelier; it contains a small dent (barely visible and not distracting). For a painting over a century old it is in good condition. The size of the handsome frame is 78 by 58 cm, the painting measures 60 by 40 cm.
