All auctions / Miscellaneous / Icon - Mother of God, Christ Pantocrator - Silver, Textile

The background of these objects lies in the Russian Orthodox tradition of the 20th century. This concerns specifically a so-called wedding couple (Venchalnye ikony). In an Orthodox marriage sacrament it is traditional that the bride and groom are blessed with a fixed set of two icons: • Left (the selected object): The icon of Christ Pantocrator (the All-Ruler), who holds an opened Bible. This icon was traditionally used to bless the groom. • Right: The icon of the Mother of God of Kazan (with the infant Jesus), used for blessing the bride. Features & Protection • The Riza (or Oklad): The icons are covered with a metal shell, a so-called riza or oklad. This originally served a practical purpose: to protect the underlying painting from soot and grease from candles, oil lamps, and incense in the living room. Additionally, it was a way to honor the holy figures with precious materials. • The Red Corner: After the wedding this couple received a central place in the 'beautiful corner' or Krasny Ugol (the prayer corner) of the new family home to accompany them for the rest of their lives. The metal used is silver, at the bottom there is a hallmark with “925” visible.
