Property of Private Estate, SC Description: John Austin Sands Monks (American 1850-1917), Landscape with Stream, Oil on Canvas, signed 'JASMonks' and dated '09' lower left, unframed. John Austin Sands Monks was an American painter and etcher known especially for his paintings of sheep. Born in Cold Spring, he was educated at the Hudson River Institute and studied engraving under George N. Cass and painting under George Inness. Monks was a member of the Boston Art Club, Copley Society Boston, and the New York Etching Club. From 1804 to 1909, Monks exhibited over seventy oils, watercolors, and etchings with the Boston Art Club. He also exhibited with the American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club , and the New York Etching Club. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Parrish Museum.Measurements: Height: 20 in. x Width: 30 in.
