The Dish has a large oval form with a shaped rim decorated with bold gadrooning, interspersed with bold Rococo shells, flanked by acanthus foliage. One side of the border is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a pluming scroll cartouche and the other with a contemporary Crest. The Dish is in excellent condition, with crisp marks on the reverse. The work of John Houle is nearly always of exceptional quality and design, reflecting his apprenticeship in the Paul Storr workshops. The arms are those of Broadhead quartering Brinckman and Bingley and impaling MacDougall. Theodore Henry Broadhead (1767-1820) married Elizabeth Macdougall, daughter of William Gordon Macdougall at St. George's, Hanover Square, London. The couple had 8 sons and 4 daughters. Broadhead was descended from a Hanoverian court page (Brinckman). He had a military career and had a cornetcy in the 1st Life Guards in 1790, several ranks in the West Yorkshire Militia- Lieutenant 1791, Captain Lieutenant 1792 and Captain in 1794. He was also a Lieutenant in the Marylebone Volunteers. He served as Member of Parliament for Wareham from 1812 to 1818 and Yarmouth (Isle of Wight) 1820- 12th December 1820. He lived at Holly Grove, Windsor. This house was designed by Thomas Sandby and was later known as Forest Lodge. It was purchased by the Crown in 1829 and is now the home of the Prince & Princess of Wales and their family. John Houle was the son of John Houle, chaser, and was apprenticed to the great Paul Storr. He was free in 1807 and his first mark was entered in 1811 as a plateworker in Clerkenwell, London. His second mark was entered in 1813. Livery of the Vintners in 1818 as silversmith and third mark in partnership with his two sons, Daniel John Houle and Charles Houle in 1844. In 1845 Daniel and Charles Houle entered their own mark in joint partnership, working until 1884, supplying high quality silver articles in a large variety of styles to selected retailers.
