Jules SIMON. 6 Letters (5 autograph letters, 1 signed letter) - Jules SUISSE, known as Jules SIMON (Lorient, Morbihan, 1814–1896) Minister of Public Instruction, then Head of Government, 1876 – 4 letters from the author to his publisher (circa 1861), regarding the translation of *L’Ouvrière*. In this book, published in 1862, Jules Simon examines the economic and social conditions of female workers since the advent of large-scale industry: “… I’ve had no luck with my translations of *L’Ouvrière*… I recently toured Belgium to promote workers’ communities. Two societies were founded, one in Verviers, the other in Saint-Quentin, France… ” + Letter from A.S., both friendly and political, dated May 26—Letterhead: “Place de la Madeleine, 10.” 1 p., in-8°: “My dear de JOUVENCEL. I am convinced that you have been misled by being told that you would not be the only opposition candidate in the second round of voting. It is an absolute rule—one that no one fails to follow—to step aside in favor of the independent candidate who received the highest number of votes in the first round. First we count our votes, then we unite against the opponent—that is, against the official candidate...” + Letter signed by Jules SIMON, President of the Council, Minister of the Interior—Paris, March 27, 1877—to Mr. HÉMON, Member of Parliament.
