Léon GOLZAN, writer, journalist, and poet. He succeeded BALZAC as president of the Société des Gens de lettres. (Marseille (13) 1803–1866) - 7 LETTERS A.S. “Léon GOLZAN”: 4 L.A.S. to Madame SANDEAU and 3 L.A.S. to Jules SANDEAU (1811–1883; writer, member of the Académie Française). “My dear friend (Jules Sandeau). Have you returned from Nancy? Has your son been appointed admiral? I’ll go find out all this good news in a few days. We’ll chat, we’ll smoke, and I’ll go to greet Madame Sandeau, who would be the true patroness of literature and writers if she were Empress. It’s true that if you were Emperor, I would be your Minister of Public Instruction. How that would lift my spirits!... » + « My dear friend. I have just lost the best of brothers, all that remained of my family. One of these mornings I’ll turn to your kind friendship for those words that encourage and revive the spirit. I am leaving Paris for a few days. During the 48 hours of sorrow I have just endured, I reread *Vaillance*. Books that can be read even in times of grief are truly powerful and beautiful. Yours delighted me…” + “Dear Madame SANDEAU. Accepted. Tomorrow, Thursday, I will be delighted to accept your gracious invitation. On Monday I looked everywhere for you and your dear Sandeau at the Tuileries, but you were nowhere to be found. I saw only his… Marshals of France? What a consolation! Best regards to you and your better half.”
