For sale: A remarkably monumental and early Dutch-language family Bible (States Translation) from the year 1867. This rare luxury edition was printed by the renowned Amsterdam master printers Roeloffsen-Hübner & Van Santen in collaboration with Gebroeders Binger, commissioned by the Nederlandsch-Luthersch Genootschap for Inward and Outward Mission. A beautiful piece of nineteenth-century Dutch heritage of top quality. This lot contains a unique piece of tangible family history, making the provenance of the book beautifully documented. Unique Provenance (Historical Document): The Bible comes with the original, handwritten membership certificate (attestation) from 1877 of the Nederduitsche Hervormde Gemeente in 's-Gravenhage. This document was written on 31 January 1877 for Pietje Pent upon her move from Zwolle to Houtmarkt in The Hague, officially signed by elder G.J. Thierry. A wonderful timeline: the book was printed in 1867 and ten years later was taken by the owner to her new residence. Features and unique details: • Typography: Executed in the sought-after Royal Octavo format and printed with the very clearly readable Medium font. • Cover: Gorgeous, heavy black leather blind-stamped binding with a detailed architectural gatework with columns. Centrally on the front is a raised, opened Bible in relief with the classic Protestant core texts from Psalm 19 and 1 Peter 1. • Fittings: Extremely unique! The original brass/copper fittings and the closing clasps are fully intact, complete and functional. This is rare for Bibles from this period. • Page-ornamentation: Surrounded by a beautiful gold-to-edge gilding (gilt edges). A sign that this was a very costly luxury edition at the time. • Interior: Complete with finely colored geographical maps (including The Holy Land, Solomon’s Temple and The Tabernacle) and splendid full-page engravings of biblical scenes. • Condition: In good and sturdy antiquarian state. The spine is solid and the letters BIBLIA are still sharply gilded. The book shows normal, characteristic signs of aging at the edges of the cover appropriate to its nearly 160 years. • Extra historical detail: Includes a separate historical insert 'Rooster for Daily Bible Reading' from the war year 1943, also from the Lutheran Society. This beautifully demonstrates how the book was actively used across generations. A unique collectible, historical document, or decorative showpiece for the serious aficionado of antique books and religious heritage. Photos are an integral part of the description. It will be very carefully packed and insured for shipment.
