MASTER OF THE MARTYRS (active in Naples in the first half of the seventeenth century) Adoration of the Magi Oil on canvas, cm. 43 x 56 Framing size, cm. 68 x 82 x 6 approx. NOTE: Publication catalog of works from the Intermidiart collection. The piece is accompanied by a critical note by Vincenzo Pacelli. Certificate of Guarantee and Legitimate Provenance. Work with a rich moulded wooden frame, typical of the great Baroque cabinetmaking tradition (defects): PROVENANCE: Rome, Finarte, auction of 18 December 1981, lot 288 (as Master of the Supplices) This painting, depicting the Adoration of the Magi, represents a fundamental piece in the complex philological mosaic aimed at reconstructing the figure of the Master of the Martyrs, anonymous yet talented protagonist of Neapolitan painting in the first half of the seventeenth century. The work is accompanied by an authoritative expertise by Vincenzo Pacelli. The Neapolitan historian places the canvas in the artist’s catalog and defines its chronological boundaries around 1620–1645. Pacelli describes the Master of the Martyrs as a personality with a “rich and complex figurative culture,” particularly loved by a private clientele who appreciated his canvases—usually small in size—for the liveliness of the narrative and for that intense coloration with Venetian suggestions reaching Naples through the era’s commercial channels. The canvas perfectly reflects this ability to assimilate diverse influences and fuse them into an original language. While preserving an archaic-sounding compositional setup, the painting shows strong affinities with Filippo Napoletano’s culture (personality reconstructed by Roberto Longhi), while at the same time tightening links with the atmospheres of Monsù Desiderio—with whom the master sometimes collaborated—and with Filippo D'Angelo. The most fascinating point of Pacelli’s analysis, however, concerns the relationship with the great designers of Baroque genre painting. The canvas indeed raises an intriguing historiographical question: are the stylistic choices here hinted at dependent on the models of Micco Spadaro and Aniello Falcone, or did these last two actually grasp and develop the brilliant insights introduced by the Master of the Martyrs, transforming them into the distinctive hallmark of their own art? The catalog of this mysterious painter is still being defined. The first systematic studies are owed to Pierluigi Leone de Castris (1995), who, on the occasion of the exhibition The Baroque in Lecce and in the Salento, isolated two versions of the Adoration of the Golden Calf (one in a private collection, the other at the Museo Provinciale di Lecce), previously attributed by Giancarlo Sestieri to the circle of Micco Spadaro. To this initial nucleus have been added over time: The Martyrdom of Saint Stephen from the Diocesan Museum of Naples (published by G. Porzio in 2008); The 2 from the Cognac Departmental Museum, which shows evident affinities with the Adoration examined here (and which French critics had linked to Spadaro’s workshop and to Scipione Compagno). The piece under examination thus allows us to focus on the true stylistic identity of the artist. Although dialogue with Micco Spadaro remains constant, the sharpest comparisons are with Scipione Compagno and especially with Cornelio Brusco, not forgetting evident points of contact with Carlo Coppola and with the German painter Johann Heinrich Schönfeld during his stay under the shadow of Vesuvius. FACILY REPORT The work presents in good overall conservation condition, retaining notable readability and the liveliness of the original chromatic brushwork. • SUPPORT AND CANVAS: The original canvas shows good structural integrity and proper tension on the frame. The piece has previously undergone a conservative relining, carried out skillfully, which stabilized the textile support without altering or compressing the pictorial matter. • PAINTING SURFACE: The painted film is well cohesive to the support, free of lifting or macroscopically detectable instability. The natural, physiological craquelure of the period is present, evenly distributed across the surface, testifying to the authenticity and historical value of the artefact. • VARNISHES AND CLEANING: The surface is protected by a transparent protective varnish layer which, while showing partial and natural oxidation due to time, preserves the complex chiaroscuro transitions and the strong light contrasts typical of the master’s Caravaggesque aesthetic. Small, targeted restorative aesthetic interventions, entirely localized, are perfectly integrated and do not interfere with the painting’s aesthetic quality. The painting is embellished with a rich moulded wooden frame, typical of the great Baroque cabinetmaking tradition (frame size 68 x 82 x 6 approx., with defects). “The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is supplied at no additional cost so that it is ready for display upon arrival. The frame is provided as a courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request order cancellation.” Publication: - The Myths and Territory in Sicily across a thousand cultures. UNPUBLISHED QUADRERIA catalog general of the paintings from the cycle “The Myths and the Territory,” 2026 (Pdf). The work will be shipped – given its medium size – with a wooden crate and polystyrene. In the case of a sale outside the Italian territory, the buyer must wait for the export procedures to be completed.
