MALTHÊTE (Jacques). — Méliès: Images and Illusions. Paris, Exporégie, 1996. Substantial in-4 volume (approx. 25 × 17 cm), publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding, 256 pages, very extensive black-and-white and color illustrations. ISBN 2-9504493-7-9. First edition of this important work devoted to Georges Méliès, published exactly one century after his first films, in the spring of 1896. The bibliography confirms: Paris, Exporégie, 1996, 256 pages. Jacques Malthête, a leading expert on Méliès, offers less a conventional biography than a veritable “Méliès: A User’s Guide,” examining technical processes and special effects as well as sets, color, artistic influences, and the evolution of his cinematic work. The volume reproduces a particularly rich collection of materials: drawings and set designs, paintings, set photographs, stills from rare films, and archival documents. One chapter is also devoted to Gaston Méliès, Georges’s brother and a producer and director in his own right. The book concludes with filmographies of Georges and Gaston Méliès. It remains an important documentary publication on the early days of cinema; the journal *1895* highlighted, upon its publication, the quality of its reproductions and its contribution to our understanding of Méliès’s artistic work. A fine copy, in very fresh condition inside. The cloth-bound cover retains its sheen, with only a few slight signs of wear visible on the covers and endpapers.
