Mark Tobey (1890-1976), American artist. Meanders, 1976, plate I. Good to pull for the Meanders portfolio. Silkscreen in colors on Arches vellum. Monogrammed “T” in pencil in the lower right by the artist, signaling validation of the impression. Intermediate color state: black line on a crimson background, outside the published edition. Printed and published by Edition Lanz, Basel. Tobey examined every proof submitted by Edition Lanz and validated it with his monogram. These proofs are the only Meanders signed by his hand: he died on 24 April 1976, before the edition was printed, and the edition of 77 copies appears posthumously with his stamp. Only a handful exist. Dimensions: sheet 50.3 x 65.8 cm. Condition: good. Some nicks and handling creases. The reverse bears the imprint of a work by another artist, the printer having reused the sheet for this proof. Not framed.
