The Christian Year (containing the Masses for Sundays, Weekdays, and Festivals of the entire year, in Latin and French, with explanations of the Epistles and Gospels, and a compendium of the lives of the Saints). Paris, 1693. 12 volumes in-12° (16.5 × 10 cm), contemporary full brown leather bindings, spined with raised bands with titles and gilded ornaments, edges speckled. Indicative overall pagination: pp. 28,(4),186,212; 28,372; 28,649-724,213-548; 28,549-744,487-584; 28,295-720,569-612; 28,(4),133-564; 28,241-717; 28,(4),153-646; 28,(4),261-660; 28,(4),661-806,113-424; 28,425-758,(2); 28,187-648 (each volume begins with the 28 pages of the Ordinary of the Mass). A copy without title pages, as is often the case in these practical editions intended for daily liturgical use. The date 1693 is legible in the text. Bindings follow the monthly chronological sequence (not according to the liturgical calendar), resulting in page numbering variations compared to other editions. Nobiliary stamp (the royal estate of Viareggio) impressed on every volume. Some wear and rubbing to the binding (especially in the July volume), otherwise in good condition for a work of this period. Work by Nicolas Le Tourneux (or Letourneux), an important figure of the French clergy close to Jansenism. It is one of the most complete and widespread liturgical anthologies of the 17th century: for every day of the year the following are provided: - The text of the Mass (Latin + French translation on facing pages); - The explanations of the readings (Epistles and Gospels); - A biographical-compendious summary of the Saint’s life or the feast of the day. It is a precious tool of devotion and study for the clergy and educated faithful of the era, allowing them to follow the liturgy even without perfect knowledge of Latin. The Année Chrétienne by Le Tourneux is a classic of French spirituality of the Grand Siècle, repeatedly reprinted but very rare to find complete in all twelve parts, especially in the 1693 editions. The work was later suspected of Jansenism and subjected to censorship, which increases its historical interest. The presence of the nobiliary stamp attests to its belonging to an aristocratic library. Complete copies of this print run are nowadays seldom found on the antique market. Beautiful and important 17th-century French liturgical collection, rare to find complete.
