Native American, Woodland Period. A hardstone axe head, pecked and ground into a weight-forward form, with a dark green-black surface and mineral staining. A three-quarter groove encircles the poll, leaving one face open where the haft was seated and bound with rawhide or sinew. The bit tapers to a rounded working edge, worn from use. Axes of this type served felling, hewing, and woodworking functions in Eastern Woodlands village life, and are understood to have held status as both practical tools and prestige items. Item # 204023
