Norio Mizuno - Norio Mizuno - Chawan - Stoneware - Chawan Nerikage

Splendid Seto ware Chawan (Seto-yaki), a work by the renowned Master Norio Mizuno. Designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of the city of Seto since 2010. No fewer than 34 participations in the prestigious National Nitten Exhibition. Son of an artist (heir of the famous Mizuno Shuzan), Norio Mizuno is regarded as one of the world’s premier interpreters of contemporary art ceramics. The bowl is crafted with the complex and fascinating Nerikage technique: It is not a surface painting decoration, but a three-dimensional marble effect achieved by kneading, layering, and hand-working clays of different colors before firing. The veining and poly-chrome shading run through the entire thickness of the material, making the piece unique and unreproducible, the result of an obsessive control of the clay’s thermal variations. The presence of the paulownia wood box (Tomobako) signed and titled by the artist with a brush is the key element guaranteeing its authenticity. The engraved signature near the base (Kodai) confirms the direct execution by the master. Diameter 12 cm, height 8 cm. Tracked shipping.
