Picasso's concise animal scenes belong to the most charming examples of his playful drawing. With a few precise lines, the artist manages to capture movement, character and expression in an impressive way. The motif “Le Chien” shows a humorous and at the same time elegant portrayal of a dachshund. The clear graphic structure and the minimalist visual language give the sheet a timeless modern feel. The composition impresses with its reduced, expressive linework and a direct, vivid imagery. It is precisely the animal subjects from this phase that possess their own character and clearly distinguish themselves from later, heavily abstracted works.
