PAINTING "COMPOSITION" by Oscar DOMINGUEZ (1906–1957) Mixed media on paper, signed lower right. Bears a stamp on the back reading: "Study by Maître Rheims, auctioneer, Oscar Dominguez studio" Provenance: Private collection Sale of the Oscar Dominguez Studio, Maître Maurice Rheims, November 14, 1960 Dimensions: approx. 65 x 50 cm Good condition In 1928, he exhibited his works for the first time on his native island, before moving to France a year later. The 1930s saw the creation of his first Surrealist paintings. Appreciated by André Breton for “the fiery, fragrant whisper of the Canary Islands” that he infused into his work, he became a full-fledged member of the Surrealist movement in 1934 and exhibited alongside Arp, Brauner, Chirico, and Dalí until 1940. Metamorphosis, dreams, eroticism, and the absurd are all elements that make up his compositions, turning his paintings into highly unique works that are complex to explain and understand, as evidenced by this enigmatic Double Unicorn, which seems to defy all logic or narrative. Like Max Ernst and his “grattages,” Oscar Dominguez goes beyond reality.
