PHILIPPINES. 25th Anniversary of Bataan and Corregidor Silvered Bronze

PHILIPPINES. 25th Anniversary of Bataan and Corregidor Silvered Bronze Medal, 1967. NGC MS-65. Honeycutt-630. Diameter: 58 mm. By J. J. Tupaz Jr. Mintage: 1,000. Obverse: Bust of President Ferdinand Marcos left, legend around "FERDINAND E. MARCOS PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES"; Reverse: Mount Samat Memorial on scroll with 17-line inscription, legend around "25th ANNIVERSARY BATAAN AND CORREGIDOR", date below "1942-1967". The handsome GEM example, struck in high relief, boasts a bold lifelike portrait with crisp devices. The surfaces offer a smooth satiny finish that is complemented by the antiqued patina. An attractive and heart wrenching issue that barely scratches the surface of its deeper meaning. The inscription on the scroll is an excerpt from President Marcos' speech during the shrine's dedication on 5 April 1970 honoring those who fought at Bataan. "Mount Samat represents the agony and the glory not only of the battlefield, not only of Bataan, but of all the battlefields in which we, Filipinos, and our American comrades fought together in defense of human freedom... Let the cross go up on this mountain top to articulate the final, the total commitment of the Filipino people to freedom and human dignity." Estimate: $100 - $150.
