PHILIPPINES. Manila. "Victory Carnival and Exposition" Carnival Stockholder Gilt Brass Medal, 1920. NGC MS-64. Honeycutt-129. Dimensions: 50 x 37 mm. By The Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark NJ. Multi-color enamel. Obverse: Woman with hands raised left, building in background, legend around "*PHILIPPINE CARNIVAL* MANILA, P.I. 1920", ornate border with "VICTORY" at top; Reverse: "STOCKHOLDER" with manufacturers name below. This beautifully preserved example displays bright brassy patina with complete intact enamel. A seldom encountered medal, especially so in this elite state of preservation. Clearly given great care early on and as such should be considered highly desirable. Due to World War I, carnival events were put on hold for more than 2 years. When they began again in 1920 they were met with great enthusiasm. Held at Wallace field in Manila, the city saw much involvement from the government and enormous crowds. The event was called the "Victory Carnival and Exposition" celebrating the return of the beloved grand national fair. Estimate: $300 - $500. Provenance: From the Dr. Earl Honeycutt Collection.
