PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Peru. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. NGC EF Details--Cleaned; Countermark: EF Standard. KM-138.4; Basso-56; PNM#6-180; PNM#16-377; PNM#21-VIII-170; Cacho-IX-CS-020; Gil-5-4-3-III. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837 (by decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark: Type VI; crowned Y.II. within circular incuse. Applied to the obverse of a 1834-CUZCO BoAr Peru Republic 8 Reales (KM-142.4). This decently preserved example displays light attractive gray tone with rich iridescent patination in the peripheries. The countermark is a bit uneven, but fully rendered making attribution an easy task. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now subdued and attractive with much remaining luster in the protected areas. A rather SCARCE host date/mint combination, we have only five other examples recorded. Though cleaned long ago this piece clearly sat for a prolonged period of time undisturbed and as such offers a good eye appeal with an excellent provenance. Estimate: $500 - $700. Provenance: Ex: Pablo I. de Jesus.
