CALÈS Pierre (1870-1961) "Place de Tencin, late summer morning close to autumn" Oil on thick paper, Signed and dated bottom left, Titled on the back by the artist: "the 11 7bre 53, Morning of late summer close to autumn" Beautiful work with strong contrasts by the Dauphiné painter, Pierre Calès, also known as Abbé Calès, which depicts a view of the Place de l'Église in Tencin, a commune near Grenoble in the Isère department. The artist used a palette of pure colors and played with contrasts. As usual, he uses a panoramic format for his compositions and works his painting with the knife technique to give vigor and relief to his composition. Painter and pastor of Tencin, friend of painters Jules Flandrin and Henriette Deloras, Pierre Calès holds a special place in the Dauphiné artistic landscape. It was at the age of 20 that he joined the small seminary of Rondeau in Grenoble where he received the guidance of the Abbé and painter Laurent Guétal. In 1902, at the age of 32, he was named abbé of the commune of Tencin. He remained abbé of the parish until the end of his life. He quickly became known for his painting but also for his eccentricity: nearly 2 meters tall and often surrounded by animals, such as his crocodile. His works are preserved in various museums: Musée de Grenoble, Musée Dauphinois. Dimensions: 44 x 75 cm sight size without frame and 64.5 x 95.5 cm with its original carved wooden frame, under glass.
