Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Dayak culture, ca. A remarkable and unusual hampatong (also known as hempatong, tempatong, kepatong, or epatung) guardian figure, carved from a single hardwood trunk and retaining a strong, upright presence. Unlike most traditional examples that portray ancestors or protective spirits in stylized indigenous dress, this figure strikingly wears Western-style clothing - a collared short-sleeve shirt with a breast pocket, a belted waistband, and cuffed trousers - acknowledging changing identities and external contact while retaining traditional protective functions. The figure stands on an integral stump base, its surface displaying a natural gray patina, age cracks, and weathering consistent with long outdoor exposure. Size: 5" W x 41.75" H (12.7 cm x 106 cm); 42" H (106.7 cm) on included custom stand. Item # 197872
