Rondinetti - Sonetti - 1815

LORENZO RONDINETTI: POETRY AND SATIRE IN THE FERRARA TRADITION ABSTRACT A rare poetic collection by Abbot Lorenzo Rondinetti, a Ferraran author active between the 18th and 19th centuries, composed of sonnets and pieces on religious, moral, and historical topics. The work gathers verses dedicated to sacred themes, figures of the saints, biblical episodes, and ethical reflections in the neoclassical devotional poetry vein. The author blends Italian lyrical tradition with edifying purposes, proposing poetry characterized by formal balance and religious inspiration. The Modena edition of 1815 represents a testament to local literary production in the Restoration era. An exemplar preserved in original softcover, on plain paper, with wide margins and untrimmed sheets. Modena, per G. Vincenzi e Comp., 1815. Lorenzo Rondinetti. CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE The collection sits in the cultural climate of the first half of the 19th century Italian, when religious poetry continued to be an important instrument for moral reflection and the dissemination of Christian values. The pieces follow the tradition of Italian sonnet, used as a preferred form to celebrate saints, liturgical feasts, biblical episodes, and exemplary figures. The work testifies to the vitality of small local poetic productions, often printed for religious, academic, or civic circles and today less common than the major collections of the leading poets. The presence of sections devoted to sacred, moral, and historical themes also offers a glimpse into the religious and literary sensibilities of pre-unitarian Italy. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR Lorenzo Rondinetti was an abbot and Ferraran poet active at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. His output belongs to the realm of religious and moral poetry, characterized by a strong educational and celebratory component. Following the Italian arcadian and devotional tradition, Rondinetti mainly used classical metric forms, especially the sonnet, to address spiritual, historical, and moral themes. His figure represents the world of local authors who helped spread literary culture in smaller Italian cities during the Napoleonic period and the Restoration. PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION The work was printed in Modena in 1815 at the G. Vincenzi e Comp. press, a workshop active in producing literary and religious works. Collections of this kind were generally intended for a local educated audience, private libraries, ecclesiastical settings, and literary circles. The presumably limited edition and non-commercial nature of the publication explain the relative rarity of copies today on the antiquarian market. Preservation in original softcover with untrimmed margins represents a particularly interesting bibliographic feature.
