ROULET (M.). Stereoscopic Views of Old Buildings and Landsca - Lot 268

ROULET (M.). Stereoscopic Views of Old Buildings and Landscapes of France. Lille, Les Éditions artistiques du Laboratoire Dehaussy, n.d. [circa 1930]. Oblong quarto (approx. 18.5 × 23 cm), illustrated cardboard cover by the publisher, 56 unnumbered pages, stereoscopic photographs printed in red and blue anaglyphs, with the original stereoscopic viewer with red and blue lenses preserved in its interior compartment. A curious and appealing photographic advertising publication produced for the Dehaussy Laboratory, showcasing monuments, historic buildings, and landscapes of France through stereoscopic photography. The specialized bibliography attributes it to M. Roulet and dates it to around 1930; it lists exactly 56 pages and a format of 183 × 225 mm. Each view is printed using the anaglyph process: the two slightly offset images—one red and the other blue-green—combine to form a single image that creates the impression of depth when viewed through the corresponding filters. A source dedicated to stereoscopic vision also reproduces a photograph of Mont-Saint-Michel taken precisely from this Dehaussy volume, which it likewise dates to around 1930. The album uniquely blends tourism, cultural heritage, stereoscopic photography, and pharmaceutical advertising: views of monuments and landscapes—notably Montmajour Abbey—are interspersed with advertising pages for the laboratory’s products, such as Céréossine. The collection as a whole serves as a lovely testament to the commercial use of stereoscopic photography during the interwar period. A complete copy with its original two-tone viewing glasses, bearing the slogan: “Gone! Step into the 3rd dimension—Man’s best friend.” This is an important feature: many copies have lost this accessory, which is essential for appreciating the relief photographs. Condition: good copy. Cardboard cover slightly rubbed and faded, with a few small marks and stains; interior has foxing and scattered signs of wear. Small old pencil inscription. Original lorgnette present and well-preserved.
