RUBENS (Pierre-Paul). — Rubens’ Gallery, known as the Luxembourg Gallery. Paris, Desève and Deterville, Printed by Crapelet, 1809. Folio, fawn Russian leather, gilt Greek pattern and double fillet binding, small fleurons at the corners, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary English binding). Superb set of 25 copperplate engravings printed in color, including a portrait of Rubens and 24 plates depicting the paintings from the allegorical cycle of the life of Marie de Médicis, painted by the Flemish master in the 1620s and now housed in the Louvre Museum. The plates are preceded by a title page and a colophon, and each is accompanied by one or two pages of descriptive text. Coat-of-arms bookplate engraved by James Hansard. A few slight foxing spots. Scuffing on the binding; the upper hinge has been heavily restored.
