STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 50 Cents, 1905-B. Bombay Mint. Edward VII. NGC AU-58.

The Only Known Incuse 'B" 1905 50 Cents A Potentially Unique Variety STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 50 Cents, 1905-B. Bombay Mint. Edward VII. NGC AU-58. KM-23; Prid-Unlisted. Incuse 'B' variety. Showcasing amazingly bright luster for the grade with pleasing golden accents around the outer edges. While assigned an "AU" grade, the appearance is decidedly premium, with the overall eye appeal rivaling many Mint State survivors. More importantly however, this example is a variety that appears to have gone unrecorded in every reference on Straits Settlements that has thus far been published. Upon close inspection, one can clearly make out that the mintmark on Edward VII's crown is incuse rather than raised -- an attribute that previously had only been encountered on proof issues for the date. Inspection of the grading service population reports, as well as consultation with archived auction results helps to confirm -- this is the only example to appear and it is the only example graded, making it potentially UNIQUE. Considering the small number of true rarities seen in the Straits Settlements series, a landmark opportunity for collectors to acquire an item that may remain without duplication, an attribute that would undoubtedly set a collection apart when debating its all-time greatness. Estimate: $15,000 - $20,000.
