Roman, Imperial period. A group of three miniature free-blown glass vessels, small enough to sit in the palm of a hand. At left, a sea-green juglet with a squat body rises to a tall neck and a folded, flaring rim, with a thin applied handle. At center, a pale greenish flask has a globular body, a long cylindrical neck, and a broad, everted lip. At right, a small olive-toned jar with a single strap handle has a rounded body and a thickened collar at the neck. Burial has left all three with silvery, milky, and ochre weathering, and patches of iridescence glint through. Small containers like these probably held perfumed oils, cosmetics, or medicines. They come from the glassblowing industry that spread through the Roman Empire after the 1st century BCE. Each vessel rests on its own clear display stand. Item # 205136
