Beautiful colored woodcuts, heightened with egg-white of four Thrush Sneaky Wrasse fish. Published in Ulisse Aldrovandi's "De Piscibus Libri V". Bologna, N. Thebaldinum, 1638. Dimensions: 35,4 x 24,3 cm. The illustrations reflect the fascinating early attempts to classify and describe marine life during the Renaissance and early modern period, combining scientific observation with the artistic traditions of natural history illustration. Ulisse Aldrovandi was a professor of natural history at the University of Bologna and one of the most influential naturalists of his time. His monumental illustrated encyclopaedia of the natural world was published largely posthumously and became an important reference for European scholars and collectors. De Piscibus was first published in Bologna in 1613 and contains numerous woodcut illustrations documenting the extraordinary diversity of aquatic creatures known to early naturalists. Good condition. Some shine-through.
