Traditional Ethiopian folk painting depicting a densely populated battle/history scene: mounted warriors, dignitaries under umbrellas, soldiers with rifles, cannons and flags in the Ethiopian national colors, with Amharic script. Possibly a representation in the context of the Battle of Adwa (1896), a central event in Ethiopian history. Characteristic strong use of color and the narrative, flat pictorial language of Ethiopian folk art. Technique: Tempera/Gouache on cotton canvas, mounted on wood Dimensions: 48 × 90 cm (including frame) Dating: acquired in the 1920s; created in the first half of the 20th century Condition: good overall condition (see photos) Provenance: Purchased in the 1920s in Addis Ababa by Wilhelm Haas (1896–1981), then secretary of legation at the German embassy in Ethiopia. Subsequently owned by his son Dr. Gottfried Haas (1943–2016). Since then continuously in the family’s possession. The fabric was later mounted on wood and professionally framed (frame maker Singapore, presumably 1981–1983). The biographies of both previous owners are publicly documented (Wikipedia).
