Compared to classic gemstones such as the emerald and the sapphire, tourmalines are a relatively recent discovery. They began arriving in Europe more regularly in the 18th century, first from Ceylon and then from Brazil. Consequently, their name does not, as is usually the case, derive from Greek or Latin, but is derived from the Sinhalese word for “colorful stone,” turmali. As the name suggests, tourmalines come in many colours. It is even rarer for a single stone to have more than one colour. This pendant is therefore a special piece of jewellery for gemstone lovers. The minimalist design, which features ornamentation only when viewed from the side, was conceived as a setting for a particularly large tourmaline weighing approximately 83.00 ct. The gemstone has been classified as bicolor in a gemmological certificate, but to the eye it offers a far greater richness of hues. Depending on the light and viewing angle, it displays olive-green, orange, and nearly burgundy-red banding. The step cut, with its numerous facets, beautifully highlights this richness of color. A fascinating tourmaline in a modernist setting that superbly enhances the color effect. The piece of jewellery comes with a laboratory report.
