VintageGold Necklace with Crocodile Skin Texture, Gucci, c. 1985

Jewellery and fashion have always been closely intertwined. What is created for the catwalk finds its counterpart in the lustre of precious metals. It is therefore hardly surprising that the great fashion houses of the 20th century not only designed clothing but also developed their own jewellery lines, in which their style was distilled in a unique way. Thus, the world of haute couture naturally gave rise to a world of haute joaillerie. This necklace from Gucci was created in the 1980s. The design is uncompromisingly powerful: fourteen large spheres of high-carat yellow gold are strung together to form a striking necklace. Their surfaces feature an embossed pattern reminiscent of crocodile skin. This interplay with texture thus bridges the gap back to the fashion from which this piece of jewellery emerged: in the 1980s, crocodile-skin handbags and belts were all the rage. The necklace elegantly combines fashion and jewellery – whilst bearing the signature of one of Italy’s greatest fashion houses. The necklace came to us from a significant collection in Stuttgart.
