Ceramic plaque featuring the clipper ship Great Republic under full sail, reproduced from an original marine painting by Skillet. The rectangular plaque is set in a bird's-eye maple veneer frame with a gold-toned inner slip, brass side handle, and a brass nameplate inscribed Clipper Ship GREAT REPUBLIC WEDGWOOD. The reverse side bears a printed oval Wedgwood mark for Barlaston and a historical label transcribed as follows: Great Republic There were two Republics, the first was built in 1853 by Donald McKay, East Boston, U.S.A., and was the largest merchant sailing ship constructed in the U.S.A. After partial destruction by fire she was rebuilt at Greenpoint, Long Island, and in 1868 was purchased by the Merchants Trading Company, Liverpool, England, and renamed Denmark. Reproduced from the original painting by Skillet with the permission of the Peabody Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.
